In some emergencies, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the FDA issues an Emergency Use Authorization to give access to critical medical products because no approved products are available.

Full FDA approval takes longer, because more information needs to be reviewed over a longer period of time. When the FDA fully approves a product, patients can be sure the approval is based on large amounts of scientific data.

The Pfizer vaccine is fully FDA approved for ages 16 and older. It has FDA Emergency Use Authorization for children 6 months to 15 years.

The Moderna vaccine is fully FDA approved for ages 18 and older. It has FDA Emergency Use Authorization for children 6 months to 17 years.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine has limited FDA Emergency Use Authorization for adults 18 and older who cannot or will not receive any other type of COVID vaccination. If you are considering a Johnson & Johnson vaccine, please contact your doctor to see if it’s a good choice for you.

The Novavax vaccine has FDA Emergency Use Authorization for those 12 and older.

If you have any questions on which vaccine might be right for you or your keiki, please ask your doctor.
